the music in our program comes from a period in which the kingly instruments had achieved their final blossoming before falling back into a winter of hibernation in libraries and archives. _with lively dances and emotional sonatas they display the moving power of their expressive and centuries-long refined and continually developed capacities to rekindle the spirit. _a borderless and subtle world of fantasy seems to have been at the origin of these compositions. _the composers are searching here for a musical depth and in that search make use of the refined and transformational sound of our instruments. _the humanists prefered the combination of lute and viola da gamba, because their tonal properties complement one another and in a cordial manner create musical combinations that are refined and rich in contrast, often bringing to the fore secret melodies and harmonies. _this music was, so it was said, composed according to nature.
