the seventh edition of off-crimmp_cinema was compiled by noud heerkens and featured films by filmmakers who do not live in rotterdam but have a special connection with the city. _exceptional films with an oscar nomination, an impressive track record, or coinciding with a unique book publication.

 

PROGRAMME

# 1. NO HORSES ON MARS | bea de visser | 2024 | 15 minutes | experimental

look into a horse’s eyes and find intelligence and sensitivity. _this experimental documentary from the perspective of a horse wonders: if they are animals, what are we?

in this film, the director visualises the experience of ‘the other’, at the same time sensing this can never really be conveyed to the viewer. _’no horses on mars’ is the product of intensive research and observations of the behaviour, hearing, perception and brain function of horses. _a short documentary with fictional elements, this is the direct sequel to her film 'the animal that therefore i am' (2019), in which the director introduced the animal gaze. _this film adopts this criticism of a world view that gives man centre stage, and shows the world through a horse’s eyes.

 

# 2. WANDER TO WONDER | nina gantz | 2023 | dutch subtitles | 14 minutes | animation

a beautiful, dark, comical, highly original film about the three stars of a children's television series from the 1980s, mary, billybud and fumbleton. _after the creator of the show dies, they are left alone in the studio. _plagued by hunger and grief, they struggle on and make increasingly bizarre episodes for their fans.

nina gantz gained instant worldwide fame with her graduation film ‘edmond’, which promptly won her a bafta. _her second film, ‘wander to wonder’, is another short stop-motion animation. _it is exceptionally funny, heartbreaking and melancholic. _how you can sometimes tell more and touch deeper emotions in 14 minutes than in an hour and a half.

 

# 3. A PERFECT STORM | karel doing | 2022 | 3 minutes | experimental

‘a perfect storm’ is a landscape film or, more precisely, a landscape imprinted on the film's emulsion. _the artist has used seeds, tiny composite flowers and other small elements of cultivated plants that grow in his garden and wild plant species gathered from a nearby nature reserve.

 

# 4. OXYGEN | karel doing | 2023 | 6 minutes | experimental

blades of grass create an illusion of fast forward motion. _sparks fly off in all directions. _a roadmovie beyond the human: the film is the car, the landscape is the driver.

a film about plant blindness and disrupted urban ecologies made during a residency at torre lab in porto.

 

# 6. THE TURTLE AND THE MONK | anaïs lopez | 2024 | english subtitles | 33 minutes | experimental

off-crimmp_cinema_07, the turtle and the monk, anaïs lópez, stage ocw, rotterdam

a larger-than-life story about grief, nature and the magic of imagination.

the multimedia project recounts the true story of visual artist and photographer anaïs lópez’ search for the golden turtle kami, goddess of the kamo river. _a multi-layered narrative about grief, the human urge to control nature, and the magic of the imagination.

this project consists of an experimental film, an artist’s book, a performance and an exhibition. _the entire project is on view at japan museum sieboldhuis in leiden._the exhibition runs from march 28th to december 7th 2025. _at off-crimmp_cinema, we only show the film.
